Tough Climbs

  1. Fremington Edge (Near Reeth, Yorkshire Dales)
700' in just over 1 mile (1 in 7.75), as tackled in this ride.
This is the mother and father of all climbs. It's the 5th steepest average gradient that we've done, and the 3rd longest hill, the two longer ones being substantially lower gradients.
It starts off as tarmac road that deteriorates in stages until it is just a rough stone track. The gradient rarely eases from bottom to top and it seems to just go on forever and ever. You can never really see the summit until you arrive, which may be a good thing. The tarmac part, while steep and prolonged, is easily rideable, the loose, stony section at the top is a lot more tricky.
