Tearooms and Cafes

This is not an endorsement or otherwise, simply my opinion, and nor are these in any particular order, just first come, first served!

  1. Castle Tea Rooms, Castleton, North York Moors.
    Best scones of anywhere.
Great all-day breakfasts including a veggie version that includes veggie sausages, or you can just ask for whatever ingredients you want.
Totally bizarre WWII era music playing constantly.
Plenty of window seating so you can (hopefully) keep an eye on your bike.

  2. Glebe Cottage, Kildale, North York Moors.
Very nice and very welcoming tearoom. No airs and graces; muddy boots, dogs, bikers are all welcome. Excellent scones, strange range of specialities (grilled halloumi, brie & cranberry toastie, Baileys(tm) Latte) weird table decorations and a ramshackle array of books and toys to keep children amused!

  3. Danby Moors Centre, Danby, North York Moors.
Can be hit and miss if you don't get there early enough.
Quick to run out of scones and unsympathetic if the hot food curfew kicks in while you are already in the queue!
Food is generally good, scones (if you're lucky enough) are decent and you usually get enough jam with one lot to do 3 lots!
Staff are all about 12 years old and yet do an amazing job of getting tons of orders out quickly and accurately.

  4. Dales Bike Centre, Low Fremington, Reeth, Yorkshire Dales.
Very friendly place, almost always filled exclusively with bikers. Great for a bit of craic and run by people who really know their stuff, biking wise. On-site accomodation, skills courses, bike shop, bike wash, you name it it has it.
Decent cakes and hot food (cheese & beans on toast for me), speciality coffees but sadly rarely any scones!

  5. Copper Kettle, Reeth, Yorkshire Dales.
Used to be our regular haunt when in Reeth. Decent scones, good all-day breakfast but bizarrely no toast and no beans - so no beans on toast! Service isn't always with a smile, sometimes the Yorkshire grittiness gets the better of them.

  6. The Posthorn, Leyburn, Yorkshire Dales.
Decent all-day breakfast, good scones and awesome cakes. Very friendly service.

  7. The Lodge Tearoom, Marske, Yorkshire Dales.
A new business (April 2010) by the look of it, and one that I hope goes on to do well. Lots of positives - cozy, walker & biker friendly conservatory & garden; excellent cafetière of coffee; quite simply the best Yorkshire Rarebit I've ever had; decent bacon buns and cakes; good choice of ambient music. Downsides are no scones (to her credit, the owner says this is because she isn't yet happy with her recipe) and a quite limited food menu. Possibly this will improve as business picks up. Ideally situated on Wainwright's C2C Walk and also for our ride from Marske.
